Foraging and Wild Food
The forests in the Geopark are a real treasure if you like foraging berries or mushrooms. Vast forests, pure environment with long sunny summer days and bright nights give an incredibly delicious taste to berries and fungi. It is not only the aroma- Finnish wild berries and mushrooms are clean and healthy: they contain huge quantities of vitamins, fibres and anti-oxidants. Everyman’s Rights ensures that anyone can stroll into the forest and gather these berries and fungi. It’s a real Finnish experience which can be enjoyed from early spring to late autumn.
For a long time, hunting was almost a vital necessity for Finnish families. Wilderness was used as a source of food and fur. The tradition of hunting is deeply rooted in the Finnish culture and has maintained its position as a common well-respected hobby with high social acceptability. Today, elk, reindeer, hare and grouse are still traditional local dishes served in the home and fine dining restaurants. There are strict requirements and regulations for hunting in Finland and it is advisable that you contact companies in the area that provide hunting services prior to your trip to the geopark.
