Canoeing – let the river take you where it flows!
Canoeing requires no special skills, other than the ability to swim, and no previous experience is necessary. It is a very accessible sport and it offers something for everyone, young or old. Canoeing through Rokua Geopark can be the most rewarding way to explore its rivers, lakes and landscapes. From the water you often get to experience a different, gentler perspective as there is time to take in the landscape, observe the wildlife and enjoy the journey as you paddle along.
Businesses in the area provide trips by kayak or open canoe, run to the highest safety standards. You will receive full training, equipment hire, maps, safety briefing and you can request to be accompanied by a local expert guide if you wish.
Good canoeing spots in the Rokua Geopark include the Montta and Vaalankurkku areas on the Oulujoki River, on lakes in Rokua and the Lake Oulujärvi area. The Lake Oulujärvi hiking area also includes canoeing routes which will take you further down the Kutujoki River as far as Lake Otermajärvi. There are sheltered campfire sites along the routes and shelters where you can cook and stay the night.
