Lake Oulujärvi
With a surface area of almost 900 km2, Lake Oulujärvi is known as the sea of Kainuu. Lake Oulujärvi is the fourth largest lake in Finland and is geographically situated almost in the middle of Finland. Its beautiful sea-like scenery features the flat plains of Ostrobothnia, the fells of Kainuu, shining golden beaches and bare rocky islands.
Lake Oulujärvi differs from Finland’s other lakes due to its beautiful stretches of open water. Lake Oulujärvi also boasts a large number of islands. In fact 650 islands have been counted with an area bigger than 100 m2. The lake’s large size means it is home to an abundance of wildlife. You might encounter marine species such as ruddy turnstones, great cormorants, and white-tailed eagles drifting above the water. As well as picturesque views and varied wildlife, there are gently sloping sandy beaches that provide safe and pleasant places for family swimming.
Fish, canoe and hike at Lake Oulujärvi!
Lake Oulujärvi is relatively shallow, which makes it ideal for fishing. The lake has a very stable fish stock including pike, pikeperch, lake trout and perch. The best fishing spots are included in the fishing trips led by our qualified guides. In addition, highly popular fishing events are arranged, such as the Hauenuistelu (pike angling) European Championships and the Oulujärvi petoveto (predator hunt). These events are open to everyone interested in these species.
You can explore the various areas of Lake Oulujärvi by canoe, for example. Idyllic rest spots with lean-tos and places to visit can be found on the shore and on the islands in the lake. For example, Manamansalo Island is worth a visit: it has kilometres of sandy beach, camp sites, marinas and stunning hiking trails. Finland's only inland archipelago hiking area has been created there.
Kuosto Island, whose sandy esker rises above the wide, open lake, is one the most beautiful spots in the area. It has been forming since the Ice Age. This is reflected in the island's fine escarpments and steep shoreline slopes. The northern parts of the lake landscape are dominated by the Säräisniemi promontory, whose rugged terrain projects for kilometres towards the open waters of Niskanselkä. Like Manamansalo, this forms part of Rokua’s chain of eskers.
Enjoy comfortable accommodation and a cultural experience!
The Oulujärvi area is a great place for holidays! There are vacation options for every occasion, whether you are looking for quiet campsites, lakeside cottage accommodation, or a spacious holiday home close to services. Many places of cultural interest can be found around the lake and on the island. For example, the Kassu Halonen Art House, a music and art exhibition and training centre, is located on Manamansalo Island, and the Kankari Art Villa is located on the northern shore of Lake Oulujärvi. In addition, during the summer a number of cultural events are arranged on Lake Oulujärvi for people of all ages.
