Everymans right in Finland

Everyman’s right provides excellent opportunities for recreation both physically and mentally. To enjoy this benefit means that you do not need a landowner’s permission nor pay anything for moving in the area. On the other hand, you are not allowed to cause any harm or disturbance. In Rokua National Park you must also conform to the special regulations of the area.

Everyman’s right allows you to:
  • move in the nature of the area on foot or skis or by bike except for in private yards and fields and arrangements which may get damaged by such an activity.
  • stay in any location where moving is allowed, for example camping in a tent sufficiently far from the nearest human settlement
  • pick up natural berries, mushrooms and unprotected flowers
  • boat, swim and get washed in unprotected areas and move on the ice
  • fish using a hook and line or ice fishing rods

You are not allowed to:

  • cause any disturbance or damage to someone else
  • disturb nests or fledglings
  • disturb reindeer or prey
  • fell or damage live trees, collect dried or fallen pieces of wood, dwarf shrubs, moss or cones on someone’s private land
  • set a camp fire on someone else’s land without any forcing need
  • disturb someone’s domestic peace for example by setting a camp or by making noise too close to human settlements
  • litter the environment
  • drive a motored vehicle on the terrain without a landowner’s permission
  • fish or hunt without appropriate licences
